Over 300 athletes will be competing in 99 races over a 12 hour day with the first race starting at 7.15 am with races every 7 minutes after that. There are strong entries across all grades.
Regatta secretary, Susan Dunlea said today, “This is without doubt one of the most prestigious events on the Irish rowing calendar and by the time the last race is brought to a finale we’ll have a clearer idea of the form crews who will be returning for the Irish Championships in three week time.”
There are 3 senior eights racing in the Leander – Shandon UCC Composite, St Michaels, University of Limerick, all three are evenly matched with a determined St Michaels eager to hold off their rivals
The Women’s Senior Sculls sees Orla Hayes of Skibereen facing Monika Dukarska from Killorglin who recently competed at the Ratzeburg Regatta in Germany. Orla is currently training at the NRC under the direction of Rowing Ireland’s newly appointed lead coach, Adrian Cassidy where she is hoping to build on a great season last year.
There are some large entries in Men’s and Women’s Junior Sculling events, the winners of these races will go forward to compete for Ireland against England, Scotland and Wales at the Home International in Nottingham at the end of July.
